A KIRKBY Stephen hockey team of past and present players travelled to Edinburgh for the second year running to take part in the Hayley Wilson Memorial Tournament.

Hayley, who died suddenly in 2006, was a pupil at Queen Katherine School in Kendal and a very talented hockey player for Kirkby Stephen and the County team, before moving to Edinburgh to teach sport.

Last year Haddingtons, an Edinburgh side, pipped the Kirkby girls to the post.

This year was a different story and the outcome went to the wire as Kirkby Stephen and Hayley's other former team-mates, George Heriots, fought out the honours.

Kirkby drew against the youthful Watsons, beat an All-Stars side and drew with Heriots before finishing off most impressively with a 4-1 victory over defending champions Haddingtons.

But Kirkby still had to await the result of the final game featuring Heriots, who needed a win to have a chance of taking the trophy.

Heriots did win, but Kirkby's superior goal tally secured them the trophy. Kirkby Stephen were proud to win the cup and delighted that Hayley’s parents were able to attend the tournament.

Anyone who played with Hayley at school, club or county would be welcome to be involved and should contact the club to find out more.
