KENDAL men and Salford University men braved the inclement conditions and played out an entertaining Kukri North West Div 5 match at the Cinder Ovens pitch.

Unfortunately, the final result - a 2-0 defeat for Kendal - leaves them with only one point from their first five games. The visitors took the game by the scruff of the neck and forced a penalty corner with their first attack.

Josh Chacko saved the initial strike but the rebound was pounced upon and a clever flick just inside the near post opened the scoring.

The Greens regrouped and excellent work by Andrew Smith and John Stanworth in midfield set up a series of scoring opportunities.

Sadly, each one was missed and Kendal were dismayed to see so many chances go just wide of the mark. Charlie Crooke, playing his first full Saturday game, was effective on the left wing, displaying great confidence running with the ball and producing a series of useful crosses.

Andrew Smith's performance was especially impressive as he and Stanworth were tireless in harrying opponents and winning back the ball to drive Kendal forward.

The home defence looked more secure than in recent matches, with vice-captain Martin Boyd doing a great job of keeping the back-four together.

Goalkeeper Josh Chacko was only occasionally called upon, and made a number of solid clearances when needed.

Only one goal down for much of the game, Kendal always looked as if they might gain something.

Perhaps the weather made life more difficult for strikers than for defenders, but whatever the reason, the Greens strike force of Ewan Galloway and Steve Barclay could not find their touch as time and again they hit the ball wide or high.

Late in the second half Salford put the result beyond doubt with a well-taken second goal from a penalty corner.

Kendal came off the pitch with much to be pleased about in terms of team and individual performance, including a pleasing cameo role from Theo Swayne who showed commitment and maturity.

The two excellent umpires worked together well and helped to keep the game enjoyable for both sides.
