Windermere......3 Liverpool Univ....0

WINDERMERE Men just beat the frost and managed to navigate their way through a bank of fog rolling in off the lake to achieve a vital 3-0 victory over Liverpool University 2s at Troutbeck Bridge on Saturday.

A lively students’ side put Windermere under terrific pressure in the first ten minutes but the home side’s defence held firm with, at times, outstanding cover tackling by Dominic Quill, Rob Griffiths, Neil Moysey and Mark Kendrick.

Gradually, man of the match Andy Hartnett and Scott Santamera began to counter the busy Liverpool midfield and, after a goalless first half, it was Windermere who began to create the better chances.

Will Dolman put them ahead after a telling move down the left wing found him unmarked in the D, allowing him to scoop the ball past a stranded goalkeeper.

More pressure brought a second goal, also from close range, for the determined Jordan Field and the third goal was a delightful flick by in-form Stuart Morgan, who only had the keeper to beat after another well-worked team move.

The students never gave up but although they forced a couple of penalty corners they still could not break the resolve of a well-organised Windermere rearguard who completed yet another clean sheet.

With NW Division 6 North leaders Didsbury not playing because of the frost, Windermere have now gone top of the league table.

Windermere women’s match at Clitheroe was frosted off and Windermere Sunday Association side’s game at Kirkby Lonsdale was lost to the weather, too.
