SKIPPER Ikram Ullah produced a well-judged knock of 73 and took two vital stumpings to lead Kendal to a five-wicket win over Lancaster in the 3-D Northern League on Saturday.

Kendal were not unhappy when the visitors' skipper David Heywood chose to bat on a drying wicket, which offered promise of improvement.

Lancaster's professional Pakistani Taufeeq Umar was making a belated bow for the club, having missed the first league matches, but went for nought off the first ball of Stuart Parkin's opening over.

It was Tim Barry who was the mainstay of the Lancaster innings with 89 and he found support from Ryan Nelson (30) and Michael Walling (36).

Ullah stumped both Nelson and Walling as the push for runs came and Barry was run out still seeking his first Northern League century. However, Lancaster still managed to reach a competitive 181-8, but Kendal proceeded to knock off the runs with an over to spare.

Ullah laid the foundations for a successful reply, his 73 featuring seven fours as he shared stands of 61 and 54 with Terry Hunte (27) and South African professional Ross McMillan (35).

It was a spectacular knock from McMillan, who clouted three successive sixes off Walling before he top-edged the fourth delivery to be caught and bowled.

A good contribution from newcomer Donovan Du Plessis (23 not out) helped Kendal to reach their winning total of 185-5 in the penultimate over of the day.

On Monday, Kendal had to be content with taking eight points from a winning draw against Barrow at the Ernest Pass Mem-orial ground.

Ullah still has to win a toss and when asked to bat, Kendal were reduced to 84-4 at the halfway stage. McMillan knuckled down to do a job and his top-scoring unbeaten 57 enabled Kendal to stay in the contest with a total of 171-8. Ullah (32) and Parkin (17) were the next highest contributors.

Barrow struggled in reply against a strong Kendal bowling attack and at 74-6, with Kevin Howarth having made a couple of important breakthroughs, it looked as if the visitors would go on and win.

However, Graham Dawson (18 not out) and Peter Wilcock (17) saved the game as the home team closed on 116-8, with Howarth (3-24) and Bem Simm (3-31) sharing the bowling spoils.

Oliver Killiner also took two excellent catches fielding at short leg.
