KENDAL Seconds swept to a convincing 38-0 victory in the Cumbria Second XV Cup final over Penrith Seconds at their opponents' ground on Saturday.
Openside flanker 19-year-old Liam Nicholson notched a hat-trick of tries and appropriately picked up Kendal's Second Team Player of the Year award later in the evening.
Kendal gradually built up pressure after a tight opening passage of play and as the forwards and backs combined effectively, grew in confidence to move the ball wide.
Luke Jacobs, one of several Colts, who have stepped up to this level and proven themselves, controlled the game from stand-off with some astute kicking under the guidance of his senior partner, scrum-half Mark Airey.
In addition to Nicholson's three tries, there were scores from wing James Gillard, blindside flanker Stephen Moss and centre Graham Coulter, with Jacobs kicking the additional points.
The tireless Nicholson popped up all over the pitch and was on hand to take Coulter's pass for an opening score and he crossed the line again following a driving maul.
After a forward drive, Jacobs was to the fore in a neat passing sequence before Warren Wharton put Gillard away and he outpaced the cover to finish in the corner.
After a good build-up from behind the scrum, skipper Stuart Cartmel carried well and offloaded for Moss to beat a couple of players on his way over.
Clever inter-play and a good line allowed Coulter to benefit from Brett Ashley's dummy run to dart into the corner.
n CUMBRIA and Durham will clash in a relegation shoot-out in the County Championship Shield on Saturday at Darlington RFC (kick-off 3pm).
Both teams are without a win this season and a victory for either side on Saturday will guarantee their place in the County Championship Shield next season.
A defeat, however, will mean relegation into the County Championship Plate.
Cumbria team manager Mark Richardson, who captained the county when they won the County Championship in 1997, said: "This is a huge match for both teams. We know what is at stake. For us, we have been training hard and every player is going to give it their all to win this match and stay up in the County Championship Shield."
Cumbria go into the game on the back of a 38-0 defeat to Northumberland and a 36-19 loss to North Midlands.
Durham, meanwhile, have also suffered at the hands of North Midlands losing 41-16 and Northumberland 39-17.
Cumbria also hope to have their half-back combination of James Gough, the Kendal player, and Paul Newton back in action for the match.
