RED and white crosses and fancy dress costumes were much in evidence as 400 runners flocked to Great Langdale on Saturday for Rod Berry's popular St George's Day 10k.

James Douglas, of Border Harriers and Eddie Simpson, of Dallam Running Club, battled it out at the sharp end of the field with Douglas taking the honours in 31 minutes 56 seconds, just nine seconds ahead of 40-year-old veteran Simpson.

Andy Buttery, Rossendale Harriers, was third in 34:02 while the first local home was Ambleside AC's Ben Abdelnoor, fifth overall in 34:19.

Twins Margaret and Angela Jordon, of Stainland Lions, fared well in the women's race, Margaret winning in 40:33 and finishing 31st, with junior Rhiannon Silson, Eden Runners, second female home, 42nd overall, in 41:28. Angela Jordon took third place, 58th overall in 42:44.

The field is pictured leaving the start line.
