FORMER Great Britain hockey player Charlotte Hartley visited Kirkby Stephen Grammar School to celebrate the success of an initiative encouraging more young people to take part in PE and school sport.
Charlotte, one of the youngest players to win Bronze at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, is now an ambassador for the Sporting Promise and the Youth Sport Trust and threw herself into the dodgeball and athletics fun.
“If we are to become a healthier, more active nation then we must encourage and inspire school children to develop an interest in PE and sport,” she said.
The Sporting Promise is an award-winning grass roots sports initiative that has already impacted over two million young people in the first three years of the programme.
It is a partnership between the Youth Sport Trust, Matalan and Sporting Pro that ensures children across the country have vital access to sports activity in school.
Ruth Houston, headteacher at Kirkby Stephen Grammar, said: “It was an honour to have Charlotte and the Sporting Promise visit us and the kids loved it. It was a great opportunity for everyone to try something new and feel inspired about taking part in sport.”
