WINDERMERE Golf Club’s Chairman Cliff Heath passed on his knowledge and expertise to Grasmere Primary School children in the first of a series of coaching sessions for local school children.

The pupils of Grasmere primary school enjoyed a taste of the new sport with Cliff and took part in fun based activities using tri-golf equipment.

For the majority it was their first experience of the game.

Grasmere teachers, Tara Blackburn and Nicky Steels, are keen for the children to develop their physical skills in different areas.

“We are eager for the children to become involved in a variety of different sports, particularly those linked with the local environment, such as open water swimming, climbing, hill walking and golf.” said Ms Blackburn. “Cumbria has some exceptional golf courses and we are planning to take the children down to Windermere golf club next year to continue their learning.”

Windermere golf club has been particularly proactive this year in developing the ‘junior drive’ with a significant number of initiatives put in place to encourage local youngsters to try the sport.

A new junior chairman and team of organisers have been put in place to drive the junior programme, with the ‘Cliff Heath Scholarship Fund’ launched in May.

“It was a pleasure to spend time with the enthusiastic pupils of Grasmere school and I am looking forward to watching them develop their skills and enjoyment of the game over the coming weeks.” said Cliff. “As a club, we are determined to encourage children of any age and background to play golf and I will also be linking in with other schools in the region to inspire that concept. We hope to welcome as many of Cumbria’s youngsters as possible to the club next season.”
