HUNDREDS of primary school children took great strides towards success after competing in a cross country competition.

The first of its kind, scheduled to become an annual event, took place at Settlebeck School, Sedbergh, on Thursday, November 27.

A total of 208 children took part in the challenging course which saw pupils in years three, four, five and six, from Sedbergh, Dent, Tebay, Orton, Grayrigg and Hawes, battle through the mud and wet.

The year three and four pupils ran a 1,000m course while the older year five and six pupils completed a 1,500m course.

Every entrant finished the course with the stand out performer being 10 year old Fraser Sproul.

Fraser is fast developing a reputation as a star of the future and the Howgill Harriers lad nearly beat the hare on his way to claiming victory in the year five and six event.

The event was organised by Settleback School's Head of P.E. Lyndsey Goodyear who had the aim of bringing the local primary schools together to create an inclusive but challenging cross country event.
