AMBLESIDE'S Annie Conway shaved 30 seconds off the record at Sunday's 3.4km Wansfell Fell Race.

Conway crossed the line in a time of 22:30 to smash the record of 23:00 which was set by Sarah McCormack last year.

The runner finished 10th overall in a field of 151 runners with just one dropping out.

"We have averaged around 70 so this was a great turn out," said race organiser Cath Musetti, of Ambleside Running Club.

"People love to blow the cobwebs off after Christmas. It is a short, sharp circuit compared to most races. Apart from two people everyone finished in under 40 minutes."

Pudsey & Bramley runner Rob Hope was first male home in a time of 20:04 and finished ahead of Staveley's Rob Jebb and Borrowdale's Martin Mickleson-Barron. Keswick's Kenny Stuart still holds the male's record of 18:56 which was set in 1984.

Conway was followed by McCormack and Caitlin Rice while the team races were won by Ambleside.

One of the youngest competitors, 14-year-old Jacob Aubray of Helm Hill, finished a respectable 35th overall in a time of 25:17 while Borrowdale's Oscar Meanwell, aged 17, won the u23 male race and Nichola Jackson the female equivalent.

And there was reason to celebrate for the Robinson family as husband and wife pairing Hazel, of Ambleside, and Mike, of Dark Peak, won the F40 and M40 races respectively.

Wendy Dodds, of Milnthorpe, was first F60 home while first M60 was Lionel Sands.

"There was a really big crowd with lots of support from families," added Musetti, who also praised the contribution of the volunteers who ensured the race ran smoothly.
