Wigton 12 - 65 Kendal

HOOKER Garry Holmes helped himself to a hat-trick and moved to the top of Kendal's try-scoring charts as his team ran riot at Wigton to keep up the pressure on the top two in North One West.

Wigton are planted firmly at the bottom of the table while Kendal still have designs on toppling neighbours Kirkby Lonsdale and league leaders Birkenhead Park so there was little surprise the Black and Ambers came out eleven try victors in the clash at Lowmoor Road on Saturday.

The first score arrived after seven minutes. South African winger Dini Noyo gathered a poor kick out of defence and ran the ball back.

The ball was moved right, with a number of forwards puncturing the Wigton defence. The ball was then spun back to the left for Mark Carruthers to score. Glen Weightman put over the difficult conversion to give Kendal a perfect start.

Weightman returned the kick-off with a long kick finding touch down field.

Wigton appeared to have taken a quick throw, but were called back by the referee, and when the throw was taken again, the ball was quickly gathered by skipper James Gough. Duncan Green took the move forward to score, with Weightman adding the extras.

Holmes picked up his first try after just 22 minutes. Wigton conceded a penalty and Weightman put the kick deep into their own half. Ben Leacock gathered the throw, and the forwards drove towards the line allowing Holmes to break away to score.

The try scoring bonus point came before the end of the first quarter. Wigton ball was turned over and there was some excellent quick handling from Bob Mataia, Gough, and James Thompson, before Noyo went over the line to give Kendal a 24-0 lead.

Five minutes later and more good handling from Duncan Green and Gough set up a try for Thompson. Weightman added the conversion.

Whilst Wigton were struggling in defence, when they had the ball in hand they were growing in confidence, but the ball was being lost as their play was often too frenetic.

They were finally rewarded with a try after half an hour of play. A penalty was put to touch and the ball was moved across field for a try in the left corner.

The final try of the half came from Kendal's Nathan Wooff on 34 minutes.

The opening score in the second half came after Wooff made a break to the line on the right. When the ball was moved back into midfield Holmes arrived at pace and burst through the Wigton defence for his second try.

Wigton had another period of good ball retaining play and stopped Kendal escaping from their twenty two to set up a second try on the right, which was converted to give them a touch of credibility at 12-41.

But Kendal turned the screw and went on to score further tries.

Weightman put a penalty kick to the line and the forwards drove to the line, where Holmes was again on hand to touch down for his third try.

The next try came after a poor kick out of defence was gathered by Mark Carruthers, who set up Mataia for a try. Chris Park took over the kicking and converted before Noyo got his second try, popping up on the right wing to touchdown in the corner after a cross field move.

The final try came after the ball was moved into midfield after a lineout on the left. Noyo fed Mataia who burst through a few attempted tackles for a score under the posts, which Park converted to bring the curtain down a dominant display.
