Generous donation celebrated

One of the best tennis players ever to come from the area, Ken Riley, has remembered his start in the sport by again donating £100 towards the development of Junior Tennis at Lancaster Tennis Club in Lune Road.

The Club is very grateful indeed for this generous donation for the fourth year in succession.

In his youth Ken was an outstanding player, qualifying for Junior Wimbledon, and throughout his adult life he has remained an active player of both tennis and table tennis often defeating players considerably younger than himself.

He has an ongoing commitment to sport and helping young people to get started and this generous donation will help to fund an LTA recognised Open Junior Singles Tournament being organised by Pat Clelland, Junior Organiser, from Monday, May 25 to Friday, May 29.

All young players based in Tennis Clubs in the local area are very welcome to take part in this event, which will be both boys and girls singles this year – 14 years old and under, 12 and under and 10 and under.

It’s not just for members of Lancaster Tennis Club but for juniors from other clubs too.

There will be prizes for the competition winners as well as the runners up.

The tournament will be supervised by DBS checked club players. It will be run as a Round Robin competition, with the exact format depending on the number of entries. It may be possible for players to enter more than one event, with an entry fee of £8 per event.

Tournament organiser Pat Clelland said: “We hope that lots of young players from local clubs will enter the tournament.

"Competitive play in the tournament will also be valuable experience for those players who play in junior teams and represent Lancaster in the International Youth Games during the summer season.”

Entry forms and further information can be obtained from Pat Clelland, Lancaster Tennis Club Junior Organiser on tel: 07870642267 or 01524 311737 or email: patriciaclelland@gmail.com.

Closing date for entries is May 20.
