TEBAY's Will Roberts, Carnforth's Ben Lovell and Kendal's Jim Macdiarmid were among the local victors at the Barbon Hill Climb on Saturday.

Hundreds of drivers took part across 28 categories with cars ranging from a Citroen Saxo to a Jackson F27, from pre-war Austin Ulsters to Morris Mini Cooper S.

The event is a National B meeting which is a qualifying round for several of the top local and regional championships and attracts many club competitors.

Roberts won the Road Going Series Saloon Cars 1400cc up to 2000cc category in his VW Polo in an average time of three races of 29.91 - just 0.16 ahead of St Annes driver Russell Thorpe - whose final round of 35.71 cost him dearly.

Lovell won the Sports Libre and Hillclimb Super Sports Cars up to 1700cc category after one of his challengers withdrew and the other failed to start while MacDiarmid fought off Preston's Brian Walker by more than two seconds to win the Racing Cars from 1600cc up to 2000cc race.

Opened in 1950, the spectacular venue with views out over the surrounding countryside may be the shortest hillclimb in the UK, but it is incredibly popular with drivers who enjoy the challenge.
