KENDAL Swimming Club star Sophie Gibson created a mighty splash at her own Championships – nearly 30 years after her mum lifted the same trophy.

Sophie came home first in the in the Under-12, 100 metres Backstroke to bring the silverware back to the Gibson family home.

Sophie mum’s Jennifer, who collected the trophy in 1987, said: “I’m so proud of her, it is a terrific effort.”

Sophie stayed out in front, holding off challenges from Lucy Sargeant and Freya Capstick, and with some immaculate turns and transitions, she timed her finish to perfection.

The gala had opened with the ladies and gents 200 metres individual medley, giving the swimmers an opportunity to demonstrate their all-round ability at four combined strokes.

Ella Mounsey built a four second lead over Megan Jones and Josie Johnson – then Nicola Carlton battled it with Daniel Armstrong and Scott Womack.

It was neck and neck to the finish, with classy Carlton taking the title.

Then came the turn of the Under-10s to show their skills in the 25 metres crawl competition – Keira Nelson holding off Lucy Klijn and Olivia Duke to claim victory.

The boys final was equally as exciting, with John Escolme powering home for a fine win.

Elliott Woodburn produced a brilliant performance to win the title.

There was plenty of excitement in the girls’ under-14 final, and Megan Jones proved a worthy winner to lift the trophy following a splendid swim.

Ollie Sargeant took the trophy in the boys event.

The Ladies event provided the race of the evening with Mounsey, Jones and Alex Agliolo all bidding for glory.

Through their turns and transitions all three made mighty challenges - and in a blanket finish Mounsey just touched out Jones for the win, with bronze going to Agiolo.

The junior ladies result went to the same winner, giving Mounsey her third trophy.

Daniel Armstrong was also in splendid form too, taking both the gents and junior gents titles.

The ladies trophy went to Hannah Edwards who out swam James and Mounsey in another close finish.
