KENDAL Judo Club's Matt Clarke will be fighting for New Zealand at the World Masters Judo Championships in Amsterdam later this month.

The 37-year-old, head brewer at Staveley's Hawkshead Brewery, has lived in Staveley for over ten years and tried to enter as a British Competitor but as he still holds a New Zealand passport his entry was rejected.

Last minute communications with the New Zealand and Oceania Judo organisations overcame the problem and he increased his training regime under the direction of Kendal Judo Club’s head coach Mike Liptrot.

Judo 2nd Dan Black Belt Matt was a junior and senior champion and ranked number two at Under 81 kilo back in his home country.

Mike will be travelling as mat-side coach in Amsterdam with the latest international judo masters competitor to come from the ranks of Kendal Club. Nick Hill, who is now one of Kendal’s senior coaches, was British Masters Champion and fought in the World Masters Championships back in 2006 in France and has been giving Matt some tips.

The event kicks off on September 24.
