Richard Edmondson meets the team behind the Westmorland Cross Fit Centre at Kendal

The worldwide sensation of Cross Fit has taken Kendal by storm.

The Westmorland Cross Fit Centre at Aynam Road, which opened in August last year, continues to go from strength to strength.

It is owned by Kelly and Lisa Screen, with the Cross Fit classes run by qualified level 1 Cross Fit Coach Liam Dobson.

Liam, who served in the army for five years, joined the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineering Corps as a vehicle mechanic, before deciding to leave the forces to become a fitness instructor.

Liam, who is also qualified in kayaking, hill walking and rock climbing, has been pleased with the centre's progression

"We decided to open the Cross Fit Centre to help the local community. We also wanted to bring Cross Fit into Kendal and the surrounding areas.

"The centre already has 120 members, and our evening classes are well attended, with between 20 and 30 people taking part.

"Kendal Rugby Club's Men and Ladies Wasps Team have also taken part in Cross Fit, with both enjoying the sessions.

"We are a close-knit group and have become the best of friends. In December we held a tournament for members, which proved to be a success, so much so the bond between us as a group continues to flourish.”

Cross Fit is a strength and conditioning programme, which consists of high intensity functional movements in which many forms of fitness are developed, such as stamina, endurance, strength and flexibility.

Power, speed, agility, balance and accuracy are also developed in this method of fitness.

The Westmorland Cross Fit Centre also have Dan Appleby and Nathan Woods involved - both are qualified personal trainers, with the team promising exciting things to come throughout 2016.

If anyone interested in Cross Fit, the centre will be running free fundamental classes all the way through January.

These will be taking place every Tuesday and Thursday night at 6.30pm. The classes are for all levels of ability, and for those that want to know whether Cross Fit is for them. Spaces are limited to 10 people.

Alternatively you can sign up to a Fundamentals class for £30, with The Cross Fit Membership costing £50.

The centre also has a gym membership for £25 a month. Those not interested in Cross Fit are more than welcome to use the centre's gym facilities
