CURLING group the West Callies picked up The Royal Bank of Scotland's Salver at the finals of The South Lakes Curling League at Lockerbie Ice Rink.

Six teams from the South Lakes curl once a month for the season which runs from the beginning of October until mid March.

The teams consist of four players each and play eight ends in a match. The game is played on what is called a sheet of Ice. The teams consist of a Lead, a Second, a Third and a Skip who is in charge of The Team. Their role is to get the best out of the team by asking for shots into the House, the circle at end of the sheet, by indicating shots to be played using their brush and hand signals and to instruct sweepers with regard to line calls for the best possible result for the team.

24 players travel up to Lockerbie, the home rink of Olympic Men's Captain David Murdoch, once a month to play their league match.

The West Callies were delighted to win The RBS Salver for the first time after very tight matches this Season with all teams playing very well.

The West Callies won on eight points with 21 ends narrowly beating The Ice Cubes in The final by one end.

Third came Kentside Probus on five points, Nomads, on four points, Windermere Rotary on three points and Farmers and Medics on two points.
