MEMBERS of Staveley village judo club are celebrating after achieving their third national judo championships gold medal.

The club specialises in the highly demanding discipline of Kata, which has seen a resurgence of interest in recent years.

Under the tuition of senior coach John Barton the Staveley club has produced eight national champions since entering the British championships for the first time in 2014.

Mr Barton explained that since entering the competition club members had produced some brilliant performances to win gold in the three age banded categories, of under 10, under 16, and senior open, with Staveley residents William Elliott and Solomon Chacko being the latest members to gain national success.

Mr Barton said: "Our goal is to produce seniors who will represent our country in the Kata World Championships, and I am looking forward to the challenges that this will bring.
