Heysham High School will soon be host to a state of the art 3G pitch after a springtime revamp of its sporting facilities.

Work is under way to replace the previous all-weather Astroturf pitches with a 3G alternative, the likes of which are now being used by more than 10 professional clubs in Scotland.

The pitches are made from artificial blades of grass which gives a surface more akin to real grass, without the risk of bad weather postponing games.

After the new surface is completed Wednesday evenings will see the staging of Football Mundial’s six-a-side league, which has run in the town for a number of years.

Harry Stobert, who runs the Morecambe league for Football Mundial, spoke about the boost that the pitch will provide: “ We are really excited about Heysham’s up and coming 3G pitch. Previously the Astroturf pitch was showing signs of wear and tear and this could put off potential new teams.

“Now we can offer the chance to use this fantastic playing surface in our league, which is open to everyone and free to join. These pitches are used by the professionals and are as close as you can get to the real thing.

“We are looking to expand and have two divisions of eight teams, in order to make things competitive and allow teams to play against those of a similar standard.”

The leagues are officiated by FA qualified referees, and are fully administrated by Football Mundial, the offices for which are open from 9am-5pm Monday to Friday.
