MORE than 700 children from across the county competed across Carlisle’s sporting facilities for the Cumbria School Games.

The county finals of nine different sports took place including golf, tennis, netball, orienteering and hockey, as well as table football, table tennis & boccia.

The event is the last of four county finals that have taken place in Cumbria this year. Approximately 1300 young people aged between five and 19 took part.

Team Furness was crowned 2016 Cumbria School Games champions. Points were accumulated from three previous events and counted towards total scores from the different sporting competitions. Team Eden came a close second with Carlisle taking third place. Allerdale finished in fourth place with South Lakes in fifth place and Copeland sixth.

All the teams participating had qualified via a series of local competitions, and the standard of competition across the sports represented this. The day was an opportunity for many of the children to experience a major multi-sport event for the first time.

It was Helen Wright’s last School Games as School Games Officer for Furness, she said: "I am so proud of Team Furness and feel it was a fitting final School Games for me. The hard work put in by all the pupils, staff and coaches has really paid off and I hope they will continue to deliver high quality PE and School Sport.

Chris McDonald of Cumberland Building Society, a sponsor of the event, said: “It is great that we are supporting the Cumbria School Games again this year. It is always fantastic to see so many young people involved in sport from all over Cumbria. We have supported many events such as this in the past and hope to continue to help."
