Kendal Golf Club hosted a record-breaking 48 junior golfers during their annual Junior Week event.

Junior golfers aged between 6 and 18 competed in team and individual competitions throughout the week, including their own version of the Ryder Cup, two trophy competitions, and the Junior Week Club Championships.

Wednesday’s Ryder Cup saw team USA (captained by Kendal’s Junior Captain Henry Boyle) take a clear lead in the morning foursomes only for Europe to make a comeback in the afternoon singles. Henry re-secured the lead and a team USA win with a chip out on hole 17 for a birdie.

Joel Ridings won Thursday’s Barrie Coates Trophy while Barney Coxon won Friday’s Parker and Parker Competition.

Josh Coates picked up the trophy for 2016 Junior Week Club Championship after a five-hole sudden-death playoff against Ryan Whitehead. Joel Ridings won the Second Division Club Championship and Jake Blamire won the Third Division Club Championship. Following a packed prize-giving event the juniors challenged their parents in the concluding Parent-Junior Challenge, which was won by father and son duo, Paul and Adam Coates.

PGA Professional at Kendal Golf Club Ben Waller said the increased numbers are due to the development of the Junior Academy. “It’s good to see so many talented juniors coming through the Junior Academy," he said. "Some of these players already represent the club at County and North of England level so I’m really looking forward to tracking their golfing success over the coming years.”

The Kendal Golf Club Junior Team also qualified for the final of the Cumbria League, which will be played against Penrith at Workington Golf Club on August 20th.

Kendal Juniors, Caitlin Whitehead, Ryan Whitehead and Freddie Horner, also have high hopes for the Andalucia European Junior Open qualifying event to be played at Kendal Golf Club on Monday 15th August.

Kendal Junior Boys, Dominic Barron Holden (14) and Will Coxon (13), will represent the County U16 team against Lancashire, also on the 15th August.
