Eight local swimmers, Shannon Parker, Megan Jones, Caitlin Deegan, Amelia Mardel, Josie Johnson, Indya Sharp, Elliot Woodburn and Anna Morrison were awarded their county tops and the honour of representing Cumbria A.S.A. in the A.S.A. North West Regions Inter Association Gala held at Wigan.

Woodburn, Parker and Deegan figured prominently in the Cumbrian team having been selected to swim four events each, with Mardel, Johnson and Jones also contesting multiple events.

Woodburn proved to be in particularly great form lifting medals from three out of four of his events. His breaststroke was outstanding in both the U11's 100 and 200m with hallmark turns and transitions and in the nix with the top swimmers his immaculate stroke pattern took comfortably through the opening laps, then final bursts of pace took him to the pads for a pair of well earned bronze medals. Turning to the more gruelling 200 Individual Medley proved a challenge for his all round skills. Being equal to the occasion he again powered his way to another bronze medal and then went on to take fourth place in the 200 Backstroke.

Parker was also impressive and despite landing just outside the medals she performed brilliantly and well up to her usual standard. Her best results came from her middle distance events with the 200 Freestyle and the 200 Individual Medley in which she finished fifth.

Despite strong swims Jones was extremely unlucky especially in the 100 Breaststroke. Up with the leaders she handled the frantic pace well but in the charge for the finish she was just touched out into fourth place. Her 100 Individual Medley proved a real battle in which she worked hard but here again just got pushed out and had to settle for a fifth place.

Seeking valuable points to keep the team amongst the leaders Mardel also produced fine performances at 100 Breaststroke, 100 and 200 Freestyle where she battled her way into fifth, sixth and seventh places. Deegan’s efforts were also to prove highly valuable as she gave her usual all out attacks and challenges. Her best result came from her 200 Butterfly where a relentless pace had her making a supreme effort and her exertions over the last length took her into fifth place.

Backstroker Josie Johnson did well in both the 100 and 200 and she proved most effective over the longer distance and gained valuable points with a fifth place. Completing their contribution both Sharp at 100 Backstroke and Morrison at 100 Butterfly gave powerful displays and produced good solid swims, all of which helped Cumbria into 2nd place behind Liverpool and District and ahead of North Lancashire.
