A SQUAD of more than 60 local swimmers from Kendal boosted entries to a Gala staged by Cumbria A.S.A. and 29 of them came away with a record 94 medals.

Jake Gibson and Megan Jones both took glory in event after event, burning off the opposition and each winning seven golds.

On day one Gibson found himself under pressure in the 50m Butterfly and had to fend off challenges from his rivals. Forcing the pace he came into the pressure zone showing controlled aggression and an injection of pace gave him that split second lead to win in a storming finish.

Day two saw him improve further and his 100 Freestyle effort saw him finish with a 20-second lead.

Jones got off to a brilliant start winning the 200 Breaststroke comfortably being the only swimmer to clock under three minutes. Her sprinting prowess surfaced in the 50 Breaststroke where she had to work hard for her win, but she went on to give a masterly performance in the 100 Breaststroke for another fine win and then impressed similarly in the 200 Individual Medley.

Both James Escolme and Elliot Woodburn had some fantastic swims that earned them five golds each. Escolme then went on to add another five of the minor medals to his clutch.

Ollie Sargeant took a pair of Golds with some terrific sprinting at 50 Breaststroke and 50 Freestyle. There then followed seven swimmers all winning gold each. Caitlin Deegan (Backstroke), Josie Johnson (Backstroke), Evelyn Atkinson (Individual Medley), Ian Bethell (Freestyle), Mathew Gibson (Breaststroke), Oliver Woodburn (Breaststroke), and Lucy Klijn (Butterfly).

Head coach Linda Womack said: “The surprise of the weekend was Emily Gibson's 50m Backstroke in which she produced the 6th fastest time in the club in the last 12 months and the 3rd fastest 13 year old behind Megan Jones and Josie Johnson.

"She also made three age group times for the first time ever as did Madeline King. It is nice when the experienced kids do well, but even more pleasing when those that just keep going get their rewards."
