THE Westmorland branch of a supporters' club for one of the world's biggest football teams is preparing to celebrate a milestone anniversary.

For 50 years fans of Manchester United from south Cumbria have been travelling to Old Trafford in their dozens, and have taken in more than 1,300 matches at the Theatre of Dreams.

Many members also travel to away games, with some spending last week in Russia as the Red Devils took on FC Rostov in the Europa League.

Fans from Kendal, Windermere, Ambleside and further afield have travelled together to witness the treble of 1999, the Champions League victory in Moscow, and to witness the club lift the Club World Cup in Japan in 2008.

The branch, formed in 1967, held its early meetings in Staveley, with the intention of running a coach to all home matches. Fifty years on and the branch is yet to miss a game.

Today there are roughly 130 members, with approximately half attending each fixture.

While the current Manchester United squad continues to push for a top four finish in the Premier League, the branch's committee is busy organising an anniversary celebration.

They will be gathering at Kendal's Castle Green Hotel with special guests including former players David May and Pat Crerand, as well as Coronation Street star and club member Andy Whyment.

The event, on May 19, will include a raffle with signed memorabilia, an auction and disco.

Branch chairman Robin Baines said: "The branch provides transport for members to get them to games. That was the main aim when it was launched.

"You meet lads from all over and you travel to places you wouldn't normally think of going."

Member Steve Buswell added: "The branch has been going strong for 50 years and we want to keep it going."
