TRIATHLON: Four members of Westmorland Triathletes started the 2004 Lanzarote Ironman race, together with 800 other triathletes from all over the world.

The aim was to complete the hardest Ironman race in the world, comprising of a 2.4 mile open water swim, a 112-mile cycle with 4.500 feet of climbing, and a marathon run to finish, all this to be completed in under 17 hours.

The swim course was two laps in the sea at Puerto del Carmen, the cycling an almost a complete tour of the island and the run four laps of an out and back course.

The weather was almost ideal with little wind on the bike course, but the triathletes had to endure a strong sun for the whole day.

All four triathletes successfully completed the race: Des Cannon 11 hours 48 minutes, Howard Richards 13-39; Andy Edgar 15-20; Dave Higson 15-39.
