THERE was a thrilling finish to the Mixed Doubles final when the Westmorland Badminton League's Handicap Competition took place over three nights at Dallam Sports Centre.

Branthwaite pairing Ann Dixon and Mike Wightman (Srcatch) took on Lauren McDougall and Tom Ogden Strickland (off +9) in the final.

After the Branthwaite pair levelled at 17 all , Strrick took the lead at 19-7 only to miss a net shot winner which would have taken them to match-point.

With the serve back with the Branthwaite pair they took four quick points to win 21-19.

Fellow Branthwaite pairing Sharon Hamer and Kate Stead (Scr GH) won the ladies doubles, with Heversham's Wendy Critchley and Burneside's Georgina Dixon (+9). runners-up.

Both pairings won five out of six group games, but the Branthwaite pair edged the honours on points record.

Sedgwick’s Peter Martindale and John Mason, of Branthwaite (off +6) won the men’ss doubles with five out of six wins, with Kendal's Joe Cobb and Martin Smith (Scr GH.) the runners-up.

In thje Mystery Mixed final Sharon Hamer and Peter Lloyd (Dalton) gave 14 points start to Faye Collis (Dalton) and Kyle Gilbertson (Kendal) in the final, but soon wiped out the difference.

Not to be outdone, Collis and Gilbertson rallied well and pushed them all the way but fell short, losing 21-18.
