FIVE Kendal Judo Club playersentered the Millom Open Junior Championships and all of them returned with a medal, including two golds.
LAST week was a typical end-of-season day, where in all the National 3 matches the team lower in the league won. Even champions Nuneaton were beaten by Macclesfield. We turned over a tough Hull Ionians side, who didn't come here to lie down. Lewis Boyd’s try takes him into third position in the try-scoring table and, with two matches remaining, he has the chance to improve on that, particularly as the two players above him have finished there matches. Will Voke, on his 18th birthday, looked the part at scrum-half and is obviously one to watch for the future. On Sunday the Cumbria Under-16 final between Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale took place at Mint Bridge. In a fiercely competitive match Kendal pinched it in injury time, despite being on the back foot for nearly all of the match. Kirkby attacked particularly through their talented backs, but were held out by a well-organised defence. Like in any game if you don't get more than one score ahead you are always in danger of losing and that was just what happened with a couple of breakaways in the last seconds. Our last away trip of the season takes us to "the Bees" - Bradford and Bingly - who are on fire at the moment after demolishing fifth-placed Harrogate in their last match. At one point in the game they were 43-5 but allowed Harrogate a couple of late consolation tries. In style they are similar to Hull with a big pack and backs, who are obviously influenced by the Rugby League played in their area, and can run straight and attack in the middle. We need to feel like underdogs to produce the effort if we are to give Lewis the chance to top the table.
KENDAL Town goalkeeper David Newnes was voted Fans’ Player Of The Year after a season of consistently brilliant displays in between the posts for Kendal Town. The end-of-season awards were made in The Park after Town’s last home fixture, the dramatic 3-2 win over Buxton that ensured a play-off place.
FAST-improving junior Jonathon Knox (Herbalife/Wheelbase) followed up last weekend's North West road racing league victory with another outstanding 'hilly' performance. The 16-year-old Dallam School pupil raced up Shap Fell in atrocious weather to finish second overall in Kent Valley Road Club's annual Shap Summit Hill Climb Time Trial. He covered the 1,500ft high, 9.1 miles miles ascent in a personal best 26mins 27secs behind winner Adam Powe (VC Cumbria), who reached the top in 25-41. Third was Adrian Lawrence (Lancs RC) with 26-33 and fourth was Windermere veteran Carlo Berton (Border City Wheelers) in 26-49. A record field of 60 riders faced the Shap challenge, including a party of Scottish junior development squad riders. First of the flying Scots was 15-year-old Grant Ferguson (Dooleys Cycles RT), who finished fifth overall and first juvenile, in a stunning 27-08. Fastest female was veteran world road racing champion Anne Plant from Pennington, riding for Wheelbase, who was also the fastest rider in the over 50s category. She clocked 32-59. Other local finishers were: 12th Duncan Orme (Team Probikekit.com) 29-18; 13th Thomas Canaway (Settle WWW) 29-27; 14th Andrew Barlow (Kent Valley) 29-40; 16th Steve Hodgson (Kent Valley) 29-56; and 25th Tim Bennett (Kent Valley) 31-47. Kent Valley's latest midweek club 10 at Milnthorpe was won by Steve Hodgson in 23-49 from Lynn Hamel on 24-13 and improving Ian Jackson on 24-54. Other leading riders were: Chris Stilling 25-41; Richard Belk 27-07; Tom Gibson 27-16; Tim Bennett 27-46; John Phillips 28-02 and Neil Stirling 28-31. Sharon Padley and Tony Dixon rode a two-up in 26-40. Pedal power comes to Coniston this coming Sunday in the form of the Fred Whitton Challenge, which annually attracts riders from all over Britain and raises thousands of pounds for MacMillan cancer support. The 112-miles Lakes Road Club ride tackles all the major Lakeland road passes in an anti-clockwise direction before returning to Coniston via the infamous ascents of Hardknott and Wrynose.
DRY, baked trails over the Furness fells made the first round of the 2009 Cross Cumbria Trailquest mountain bike orienteering series a tasty prospect, but many riders were caught out by the deceptive distances.
Cumberland 235-8. Oxfordshire 236-5. CUMBERLAND pushed Oxfordshire to a last-over finish in their second MCCA Trophy game of the 2009 season, at Challow on Sunday, but suffered a five-wicket defeat. When skipper James Smith lost the toss, Cumberland were inserted and were quickly under the cosh, losing two wickets for three runs. Gary Pratt rallied the cause with a resolute 80 off116 balls with seven fours and he found good support from Andy Gleave with a workmanlike 28 before he was third man out with the score on 91. Other steady knocks came from Stuart Burrows (27), James Smith (25) and James Beaumont (23 not out), who helped Dalton professional Graham Dawson to an unbeaten 39 from 29 balls with a six and four fours. A challenging total of 235-8 after standing at 3-2, ensured the Cumberland bowlers had something to bowl at. Indeed, Oxfordshire were made to struggle for the runs - with ten-an-over wanted at one stage - with tight work from Dawson (2-35), Beaumont (0-30) and James Lowe (0-39), off ten overs apiece. However, Shivali’s competent unbeaten 80 and solid runs from Haupt (61) and David Smith (45no) meant Oxfordshire passed the target for a five-wicket win with five balls to spare. Cumberland play Shropshire at the Ernest Valentine ground in Workington, on Sunday, May 10, for their third MCCA Trophy game , still looking to open their account for the season.
KENDAL’S James Ellison launched a scathing attack on British Superbike rival Glen Richards after the duo became embroiled in an epic tussle at Oulton Park. Airwaves Yamaha rider Ellison produced an excellent finish to race two to come home fourth, adding to his fifth-place finish in the first race to cement his spot in fifth in the overall Championship rankings. While that represents slight progress on his performance at Brands Hatch, the pressure is mounting on the 28-year-old, as team-mate Leon Camier scorched his way to a stunning Bank Holiday Monday double victory. In race one Ellison’s progress was halted as he got stuck behind HM Plant Honda’s Richards, but having pipped him to fourth in the second outing, the Kendal ace challenged the Aussie rider to speed up or get out of the fast-lane. “In the first race I got caught up behind Glen Richards in sixth pretty quickly but as soon as I tried to pass him he was being really aggressive and turning in front of me,” said Ellison. “I had nowhere to go I tried to pass him on the inside, outside and as the race wore on I saw him looking around - if I was at one side he would move over in front of me. “And it just isn’t on – it’s not safe, it is not sportsman-like and it caught him out in the end when I beat him in race two. I took him because he lost sight of where he was and ran onto the track. “It is bang out of order and if you haven’t got the pace – I am not saying let me pass but he should be a bit better about it and I hope I am nowhere near him for the rest of the season.” While Ellison was battling it out with Richards, there was no stopping team-mate Camier, who extended his lead to 11 points at the top of the overall standings, courtesy of his third win in four races. Four podium finishes last season earned Ellison a dream move to the 2008 manufacturer’s champions along with Camier, but Ellison is only too aware he cannot exist on past glories forever. “I was pleased with qualifying I knew we had a good race pace and that we could win it which Leon proved,” he added. “That’s what made today really disappointing because I could really do with getting some steady points at the top of the championship. “Fifth at Brands Hatch in the first meeting is fine but here it isn’t and the frustrating thing is that the bike is in really good form.” * British Eurosport 2 has live coverage from every round of the 2009 British Superbike Championship.
