Rugby: Passport switch allows McKain to return

NEW Zealander Nick 'Noodles' McKain is back in the Kendal squad for the forthcoming National League Second Division North season - thanks to a team-mate's mum. Opernside flanker McKain spent two fruitful seasons with the Black and Ambers and after going back home to New Zealand last year, he is back in town with his English girlfriend Kirsty, who is undergoing medical treatment With Rob Aloe and Zane Butler already qualifying as Kendal's two overseas players, it looked as if McCain might not be able to claim a first-team place. But a switch of passport has got around the problem. Officials at the Kendal club had inquired into dual passport holder Aloe switching his New Zealand status to his Samoan passport, thus qualifying under the Kolpak scheme for Islanders and not counted among the two permitted overseas players, but RFU decreed he must play as a registered New Zealander. So it's all down to the mother of winger/full back Zane Butler, who used his qualification through that English parent to successfully apply for a British passport rather than ;play with New Zealand nationality. >Unfortunately Butler has been injured while snowboarding and he to alter his plans and will be delayed from returning from New Zealand to be available to play in the Peter Kremer Memorial match against Wharfefdale at Mint Bridge in a week's time before the big kick-off at home to Leicester Lions in the first week in September.

Football - Boston mission for Town

KENDAL TOWN boss Lee Ashcroft promised that every week in the 2009/10 Unibond League campaign would be difficult and with games against Boston and Bradford Park Avenue on the immediate horizon – you can see what he means. Town made the best possible start to their Unibond League campaign with a 4-1 opening day victory against Worksop. The midweek fixture brought a further three points and a wonder goal from Kieran Walmsley as Kendal beat Ashton United 3-2 in Greater Manchester. Ashcroft’s men now head into week two with high spirits but also equipped the knowledge that the second week brings far tougher opposition. On Saturday Kendal must make the arduous coach journey to Boston to face a large crowd and strong opposition. Speaking ahead of the four-hour trip Kendal Manager Ashcroft said: “ It’s their first game of the season so we’re expecting there’ll be around 1,500 and a good atmosphere. They’re certainly a promotion rival but if we can reproduce the sort of away form we showed last season we’ll cause them problems.” After facing Boston Kendal’s players will be in action at Parkside on Tuesday night as they take on another promotion favourite in Bradford Park Avenue. The fixture has something of a subplot as Bradford will be desperate to get a result in Cumbria having left with their tails between their legs last season after being on the receiving end of a 5-0 mauling for Town. Speaking on Bradford Ashcroft said: “ They’ll obviously have a point to prove after last season but we need to concentrate on turning Parkside into a fortress, if we can do that and replicate even half our away form from last season we’ll always be in contention.”
