A FURIOUS Steve Whitehead lambasted the ill-discipline he feels cost his side dear in Kendal’s defeat at Broughton Park – a third loss in four games.

Still beset by injuries, the away side managed to dominate most aspects of play but ultimately came up short despite tries from Garry Holmes and Richard Harryman.

After a good run of form during September and October, Whitehead feels the Black and Ambers have missed a huge opportunity over recent weeks to build on those positive results.

“I’ve been disappointed plenty of times this season but on balance I have been fairly happy with the process but I was livid with things on Saturday,” he said.

“We played well in a lot of areas but two counts of ill-discipline cost us two tries and put us back down the field having worked hard to get where we were.

“Games are refereed differently at this level and we don’t seem to take frustrations out like other teams who seem more streetwise.

“I’m blazing about it still but that’s probably the difference between someone who played in my era and someone playing in this.

“Over the last month we have lost that winning momentum and confidence which takes time to build.

“And the chance has gone to go into future games with the confidence from grinding out results and that’s annoyed me.”

With some tough fixtures on the horizon, starting with this weekend’s clash with Widnes at Mint Bridge, Whitehead believes his side have made life unnecessarily difficult for themselves.

“We have failed as a side to take wins from games we cannot afford to lose,” he added.

“Some games are going to be very tight and a real contest given where we are as a team but good outfits grind out results and get through those matches.

“We will be under pressure against Widnes as they are a good side and we have not laid the groundwork in the last four weeks.

“If we had won the even games against average opposition, we wouldn’t be in the position of being forced to try and turn the tide against difficult opponents.”
