Kirkby Lonsdale 39, Fleetwood 5: KIRKBY pushed on to third place in North Lancs/Cumbria with this win and are handily place for a promotion challenge, nine points adrift of Wigton with two matches in hand.
Full back Horsfall opened Kirkby Lonsdale’s account when he came into the line and dived over for an unconverted try.
Kirkby kept on the pressure and Storey’s kick took play back to the Fleetwood 22.
From a scrum he worked the blindside, feeding Belshaw, who chipped through and flew past a defender to get the touchdown for another five points.
When more quick ball came to D. Barton and he broke through to score and Pickthall converted, it was 17-0 and Pickthall added a penalty to make it 20-0.
Kirkby looked to be running away with the match, but Fleetwood came back with their bulky forwards gaining ground.
However, the visitors were left with 14 men when Barkworth was red-carded for stamping.
At the start of the second half, Kirkby setting up a multi-passing move finishing with captain Hughes ambling over in the corner with Pickthall’s conversion from wide out missing.
Kirkby lost their urgency and depleted Fleetwood threatened to take advantage, with only last-ditch tackling stopped right winger Phillips.
When Kirkby got their act together again a break Shepherd broke to almost reach the line and found fellow back-row Voke on his shoulder to crash over for a good try near the posts.
After Pickthall improved it 50 points looked within Kirkby’s grasp.
Fleetwood had other ideas and fly-half Evans jinked through for a good try which he failed to convert.
From a scrum near the Fleetwood line, Pickthall worked a loop move and R. Barton’s angled run took him over near the posts, Pickthall converting to give Kirkby an emphatic win.
Harder work is expected this Saturday against Widnes at Underley park in the Intermediate Cup.
