Supermarket plan for Kendal could get go ahead

A PROPOSAL to build a supermarket on Kendal Rugby Club’s ground could be approved today.

South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) gave the club permission for a new home at Strawberry Fields, Oxenholme Road, in 2009.

But it rejected an application to bulldoze its Mint Bridge ground to make way for a 5,110-square metre supermarket because of increased traffic concerns.

However, Mint Bridge is pivotal to the club’s move as it will fund a two-storey clubhouse, two rugby pitches and a floodlit training pitch.

Cheshire-based developers – and club sponsors – Morbaine Limited re-submitted a modified application addressing concerns in March 2010.

And town hall planners have recommended councillors approve it.

Alex Brodie, Morbaine Limited director, said: “A struggle has been going on to bring about these twin benefits to Kendal.

"Over 400 jobs would be created and a valued community club’s future would be assured.”

You'd be lucky to get half that number of jobs out of a supermarket. A survey by the Association of Convenience Stores recently found out that following promises of plenty of jobs weighing down a planning application, in reality once the store is built, those jobs never materialise. I quite understand the Rugby Club's need for funding, but why let another greenfield disappear under concrete? I remember thirty years ago my local cricket club scrimped, saved and jumble saled it's way to a new club house with meeting rooms and squash court. They stayed at the same site too.

Its quite ironic isnt it, a facilty that promotes excercise and fitness being replaced by something you have to drive to and buy largely unhealthy foods...Its so boring all this supermarket rubbish...but why dont we all sell out and maybe put a tesco metro on Grasmere Island...or in Boot...that could do with one

I heard on the local radio that it could well be Sainsburys & I'll propbably upset people now, but I think it's a good idea. The club will get the funding needed to move & improve. Both builds, supermarket & club, will generate jobs, which are very much needed at the moment. Then the store will need staff to run/work at it, making more jobs. Yes, it will mean we loose a green field but it MIGHT bring more revenue to Kendal?

Why is this story still showing on the site when it has been superceded by one that confirms the application has been rejected?
