Second half showing not enough as Kirkby comfortably beaten by Wilmslow
5:30pm Monday 1st October 2012 in Rugby
Kirkby Lonsdale 5
Wilmslow 29
North One West
SHORNE of players yet again it was a hard graft for Kirkby as they went down to Wilmslow 29-5 at Underley Park.
Wilmslow kicked off and maintained play in the Kirkby half where the home side went offside in a kickable position but the visitors opted for touch on their left wing.
Kirkby resisted the drive from the lineout but Wilmslow spread the ball wide right where winger Day scored in the corner. Stand-off McCallum kicked the goal and the visitors led 7-0 with only 10 minutes on the clock.
Under Wilmslow pressure Kirkby went offside again, this time in front of the posts and the visitors kicked the penalty to lead 10-0, but that lead was extended with an unconverted try.
Kirkby finally got some possession, Orrega Luca went close near the right corner flag but was just beaten to the touchdown and although the home side kept the pressure on and pinned the visitors in their own 22 they were not able to get on the scoreboard.
Two bookings left Kirkby a man down for a quarter of the match, and Wilmslow’s pacy backs exploited this two converted tries to make the half time score a comfortable 29-0.
Kirkby rallied in the second half and a try came when Simon Dowker charged over in the left corner. The conversion was just missed but Kirkby were on the board.
While they denied Wilmslow any further points Kirkby could not add to their tally even when Wilmslow lost their number 12 Cooper for 10 minutes, although the spirit the team showed in the second half earned them the minor victory of winning it five points to nil.
