OWEN Coyle believes England can win the World Cup if Fabio Capello can harness a club spirit within his squad.

The Bolton Wanderers boss might hail from Scotland, but he is wishing the Auld Enemy well as they kick off their campaign against the US tomorrow evening.

Paisley-born Coyle reckons there is enough world-class talent at Capello’s disposal to match the likes of Spain, Brazil and Argentina over the next four weeks.

But he warned that if internal divisions or distractions occur within the camp, England will stand no chance of lifting the trophy in South Africa.

“Mr Capello will feel, I’m sure, that with the players he has got, he has got a genuine chance of winning the thing,” said the former Burnley boss, who represented the Republic of Ireland in his playing career.

“The Premier League is still the best in the world bar none, and most of his players will have regular experience of the Champions League as well.

“When you can draw from the best players at the Manchester Uniteds and the Chelseas, the quality aspect is all there.

"Then it really comes down to how you manage the players, and how they choose to manage themselves.

“The crucial thing with England is can they all gel together? Tournament football is all about being a team or a squad, and you simply won’t win without it.”

England head into the tournament on the back of some unconvincing performances in their warm-up games against Mexico, Japan and South African club Platinum Stars.

But Coyle says the games will have little impact on how the Three Lions will fare in Group C, where they will also take on Algeria and Slovenia.

“I think you can’t read too much into the results over the last couple of weeks,” he said.

“It’s like pre-season, you gear those game towards your players and it doesn’t have a bearing on what will happen at the World Cup.”

Coyle’s Premier League experience with Wanderers and Burnley has convinced him that England have more than enough firepower to win the tournament.

And he insists the goals can be shared around the squad, amidst worries that Wayne Rooney will shoulder too much of a burden up front.

“England have got so many great attacking players that they can get goals from anywhere,” he said.

“Everyone will look at Wayne Rooney but then you have Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard - these are players who would score goals for any side in the whole world.

“Everyone in England gets excited before every World Cup and there is pressure there because of it. But there’s no doubt about it, they have got a real chance of lifting the trophy.”
