Emile Heskey insists his partnership with Wayne Rooney will be more effective against Algeria on Friday.

Heskey was reunited with the striker for the World Cup opener with the United States which ended in a 1-1 draw.

It was the first time the pair had started an international together since the qualifying clash with the Ukraine in Dnipro eight months ago.

Rooney has often looked at his most potent alongside the Aston Villa player who set up Steven Gerrard’s goal against USA.

Heskey is confident the pair will hit it off again in Cape Town against the Algerians.

The 32-year-old said: “The more you play with any player, the more you get an understanding with them and that is the case with Wayne.

“We work together on the training field and we are well prepared to perform better if we get the chance again.

“I take the positives from that performance and try and take it into training and then the next game.

“I thought we really got at them in attack and created a few chances. They weren’t comfortable with the way we played as we caused them problems and we can do that again.”

Rooney, who was back in training alongside Ashley Cole yesterday, has been in the spotlight with question marks surrounding his temperament since he was booked against the Platinum Stars in a practice match eight days ago. But Heskey is confident he can deal with the pressure.

He said: “Wayne’s a great player. The pressure has been there throughout his career and he has dealt with it.

“He’s been in the spotlight since he was 17 years old so he is used to that and won’t let anything affect him.”

Meanwhile, Peter Crouch revealed Fabio Capello has urged England’s players to “still believe in themselves”.

Crouch, who appeared as a second-half substitute, said: “The manager knows we can do better.

“He told us he saw things in the first game that were encouraging and he has taken them and told us we should still believe in ourselves and what we are doing.

“Those are the things we need to take into the next game.

“Obviously we can improve and we know that but there were those encouraging signs as well.

“We were disappointed not to have won the game.

”When we scored the early goal, we thought we’d go on and do that but it wasn’t to be.”
