Lancaster tourist guide

Lancaster is a city steeped in history, with its medieval Priory and a castle linked to the trials of the Pendle witches in 1612 as the main focal points.

But the ancient county town has much more besides - places such as its cathedral, Judge's Lodgings, the lovely Ashton memorial and a rich list of museums and other buildings of interest.

There is an ever-expanding array of fine pubs and eateries in Lancaster city centre.

From traditional country pubs to stylish bars, there is something for everyone.

Main attractions:

Lancaster City Museum: Contains a wealth of information about the history of the City of Lancaster. It is also home to the Regimental Museum.

Lancaster Castle: The historic castle is still an operational prison but visitors can take a look at the ancient dungeons of bygone days.

The Shire Hall, also at the castle, houses a magnificent display of heraldic shields.

The Maritime Museum: It looks at the maritime trade of Lancaster, the historic port, the Lancaster Canal and the fishing industry of the area.

The Ashton Memorial, Williamson Park: The park has a tropical butterfly house with a wonderful mixture of free-flying exotic birds, while Ashton Memorial has an outdoor viewing gallery and an art gallery.
