Why I love the Lakes by Joyce Hallam

COLOUR: The views at Tarn Hows in autumn are just beautiful COLOUR: The views at Tarn Hows in autumn are just beautiful

WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT THE LAKES?

The openness and peace and tranquility in some of its more remote parts.

AND THE WORST?

Getting stuck behind a coach or tractor on a narrrow road when there’s nothing you can do about it!

FAVOURITE PLACE?

The top of Latter Barrow near Coniston on a summer’s evening overlooking Windermere. Just the sense of space and openness and the views are incredible. I just love the fresh air and it always feels so good up there.

FAVOURITE VIEW?

The view from Tarn Hows, which is also near Coniston. The colours are fantastic up there in autumn. Just beautiful.

FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT?

Zeffirellis in Ambleside is always friendly and welcoming. It’s all vegetarian food but all fresh and they have an interesting approach to meals.

FAVOURITE MEMORY?

Walking through Grizedale Forest when the trees were covered in really sharp frost.

The whole family was there and it was great to be together under all those frozen branches with amazing crystals on them.

WHAT ONE CHANGE WOULD YOU MAKE TO THE AREA?

We need more footpaths for safety reasons, especially around Hawkshead. A better bus service is also crucial. The current service is just horrendous.

SUM UP THE LAKES IN 5 WORDS Fresh-air, space, peace, views.
