England captain Alastair Cook is an injury doubt for the second Royal London One-Day International against Sri Lanka, and Alex Hales has been called in as cover.
Cook has a tight groin and faces a fitness test on Sunday morning to determine whether he can lead England at Chester-le-Street.
Twenty20 specialist Hales, uncapped in the ODI format, will travel up to Durham on Saturday night but may be released back to county duty with Nottinghamshire if Cook is available after all.
An England and Wales Cricket Board press release read: "Alex Hales has been added to the England ODI squad for the second Royal London One-Day International against Sri Lanka as cover for Alastair Cook, who has right groin tightness.
"Cook will be assessed ahead of the game tomorrow."
Should Cook be absent, the likelihood is that Eoin Morgan - who led the Twenty20 side last week in place of the injured Stuart Broad - could again step in as captain.
England lead the series 1-0, with four matches to play.
