CUMBRIA, North Lancashire and the Dales have escaped the worst of the snowfall seen elsewhere but ice is still causing problems.

Motorists are being warned to take care after temperatures fell to minus 9 in Shap and minus 8 in Carlisle last night.

This morning minus 7 was recorded at the Keswick and Shap weather stations.

Meanwhile railway passengers have been hit by major delays on the West Coast Main Line due to signalling problems near Preston, while a broken-down train hit services on the Morecambe to Lancaster line.

The Met Office is warning drivers to 'be aware and be prepared'.

A spokesman said that today to Thursday, there would be "a continuing risk of widespread ice affecting untreated surfaces."

Today is expected to remain very cold with severe frosts and a significant wind chill in places.

And as the week progresses, the risk of skidding on ice is likely to increase.

Cumbria Police is warning people to stay off frozen ponds, rivers and lakes, and to make sure pets do not go out on the ice.
