INVESTIGATIVE work on Devil’s Bridge, mainly funded by English Heritage through a grant to Kirkby Lonsdale Civic Society, has begun, reports Mr Ken Humphris of the Society. He says the photographic survey, as well as creating a
detailed dimensioned record of the bridge, will be used to define specific areas for future restoration work The next phase
is due to be carried out on June 17/18 and will involve digging a number of pits in the surface deck of the bridge to try to establish just how water is getting into the structure and causing
damage to the underside of the arches. This work will be supervised by a conservation architect and the bridge will remain
open to pedestrians during the work. When excavations are complete it is hoped that a technical solution can then be
proposed to solve the problem, says Mr Humphris. Devil's Bridge is a three-span medieval bridge over the River Lune at Kirkby Lonsdale.
It's a popular meeting place to motor bikers, picnickers and other visitors at any time. Young and foolish folk jump off the bridge!

VICAR Angela Whittaker is leaving – but fortunately, she is not going far. The official announcement at St Mary’s on Sunday was: “The Bishop of Penrith has appointed the Rev Angela Whittaker, at
present Team Vicar in the Kirkby Lonsdale Team Ministry, as Priest in Charge of the Benefice of Natland and Priest in Charge of Old
Hutton and New Hutton.” Angela, who describes herself as “a Lancashire lass” came to Kirkby Lonsdale in 2004 from Houghton-le-Spring,
County Durham. GARDENERS Anonymous could be the title of a group who have to garden but don’t know how to do it. “We are looking for guidance from the experts but to encourage membership we want to
remain anonymous” said one of the founders – who prefers to remain (that’s right!) anonymous. Should there be sufficient interest appropriate steps will be taken. To keep abreast of developments,
please read this column.

KIRKBY Lonsdale Choral Society and a large audience bade conductor Jean Charlton and Anne Rudge, pianist, an affectionate farewell atthe Society’s Summer Concert in St Mary’s on Sunday evening. An enjoyable and varied programme comprised favourite pieces from the last eight years of Jean’s directorship and featured the
delightful ‘An Evergreen Landscape – a chain of English folksongs’ by the late and well-loved local composer Roger Cann. The choir was especially gratified that all the Cann family were able to
attend as was the new conductor Ian Allan.
