Dennis Burles

DENNIS BURLES 1932 - 2018 The family of Dennis Burles are deeply saddened to announce his passing. Beloved father to Fiona, Anna and Jamie, loving husband of Theresa, doting Grandad to Margot and Frank and dear brother of Marie and Ruth. A Francophile, black run skier into his 80s and avid mountaineer, Dennis had walked the length of France and scaled many of his homeland's Scottish peaks. But he also loved his adopted Lakeland home with a passion. Dad died peacefully at home surrounded by family in Kirkby Lonsdale. He was as heroic during his illness as he was in life. His vocation as a teacher touched the lives of many Westmorland young folk. A role model and inspiration to all who knew and loved him. Dennis's funeral will take place at St. Joseph's Church, Kirkby Lonsdale on Monday 29th January 2018 at 11am, followed by a committal at Beetham Hall Crematorium at 12.30 p.m. Donations gratefully received, if desired, to Dennis's favourite charities: Plan International UK, The Royal British Legion or Marie Curie c/o Fishwicks Funeral Service, Beetham Hall, Beetham LA7 7BQ Tel: 015395 63108

Mr Burles taught me to sail while attending Carnforth High. Also taught me English I can still recite Shylocks speech from Merchant of Venice. A great teacher.

To the Burles family.
I was so sorry to hear of your sad loss. I worked with Dennis for a number of years at Carnforth High School and had a great deal of respect and admiration for him. Although not in the same department, we shared other interests of skiing and climbing.
I remember especially a ski trip to Davos with Dennis and other members of his family. I also recall climbing trips to the Lake District, one particularly where at the top of a climb he produced a bottle of wine complete with glasses - I seem to think we were celebrating a milestone birthday.
I’m sorry that I’m unable to attend the funeral as I’m away.
