Our friendship began more than fifty years ago, in the mid-Sixties when all our boats were made of wood and offered the boatmen no protection from the elements! At that time we were a band of three merry lads; Peter, Gavin and me. Peter Nock was a more private contemporary, equally valued and respected but of a more studious nature which protected him from the wilder excesses of the other three. The pay was poor, the hours unspecified but long with no overtime payments and we had no wet weather clothing and we loved it! Days with few customers provided us with an excuse to visit the local hostelry. How things have changed, some for the better but some less so. There was room then for the individuality of characters whose strengths were appreciated and whose human weaknesses were quietly tolerated within a generous acceptance that we were none of us saints.
Trouble? Aye, there was trouble at times but we always seemed to find a way through it without too much bloodshed and any ill feeling was soon behind us. How could it be otherwise between people lucky enough to work boats in one of the most beautiful parts of the world?
I am sorry that Peter and I had harsh words recently but that was the nature of our long friendship (I think we first met in ’67 or ’68 as wooden boatmen, Peter, Gavin and I ); we clashed on a number of occasions over the years but I believe that we remained friends despite those occasional tiffs.
Few now remain who remember those early days but those who do know that they have enjoyed the best years and been very privileged to have shared the camaraderie and fun of that period of boating history on Windermere. ”Round the Pretty Islands and back in time for tea”. Now who was it that said that? and, of course ”HOLD”. Laughter and tears we shared in full portion and it is with great affection that I remember Peter, Gavin, Jim Fleming, Peter Nock and many others who have now “Finished With Engines”.
With great affection,

Philip

So many of us will miss Peter, and in so many ways. Our times on the water with the gentle, humorous Admiral and his lovely Aileen will always be special in my heart. His patience teaching me to splice a rope was testimony to his knowledge, and to his love of sharing it. Thank you Peter; cruise on in peace. XX
