THE Westmorland Orchestra are bringing classical music to the festive season this year with a Sunday afternoon concert that includes a violin concerto and some festive favourites. Also, the WO has decided that tickets for the Sunday, December 8 (3pm) concert at Kendal Leisure Centre's Westmorland Hall should be free for those under 19 and full time students. Conductor Richard Howarth says they are all excited to present the family friendly afternoon concert: "It's a new departure from our usual slot and we're looking forward to welcoming lots of young people."

The concert will open with Prokofiev's Lieutenant Kijé Suite, including Troika, also known as Sleigh Ride. Herold's Clog Dance, Da Falla's Ritual Fire Dance may be less familiar titles but will be recognisable to many, as will the Thunder and Lightning Polka by Strauss and the stirring finale to Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake.

In the soloist's spotlight will be extraordinarily talented award-winning violinist Joo Yeon Sir, joining the 'wonderful' Westmorland for Alexander Glazunov's Violin Concerto. Joo Yeon says she's so looking forward to playing with Westmorland Orchestra and Richard Howarth: "It'll be my first visit to the Lake District, a place I've always heard so much of growing up in London. Glazunov's concerto is a wonderful work, with beautiful lyrical moments, depicting hope, love and sometime intense tensions."
