Northern Rail Heritage: An introduction to the social history of railways in the North of England, published by Little Northern Books, £6.
THE social history of the North’s railways is celebrated in this must-read for rail enthusiasts.
The booklet was first produced for Northern Rail employees but proved so popular with others who saw it that it has now been re-published, with a few minor changes.
As a short introduction to rail heritage, it takes the reader through from the world’s first steam-operated public railway to the creation of a network, the impact of the First World War and privatisation, and highlights the role that the ordinary railwaymen and passengers have played in history.
It is crammed full of interesting photographs, including rare pictures from the National Railway Museum collection.
For each booklet sold, £1 goes towards The Railway Children Charity.
