Ivver Sen by Keith Richardson, pastel drawings by Keith Bowen, £20

ORIGINALLY published in hardback almost ten years ago Keith Richardson's evocative book depicting “The life and times of the men and women who work the land” quickly became a much sought after piece of treasure.

The title is Cumbrian dialect for 'ever since' and refers to centuries of traditional hill farming in the Lake District through the stories of true Lakeland people, including those still holding close to their fell farming heritage today. Each chapter offers a different person's story including legendary fell runner and farmer Joss Naylor, Blencathra huntsman Johnny Richardson, who escaped three times from prisoner of war camps, Herdwick farmers Jean and Derrick Wilson and mildly eccentric Geordie Hutton who definitely “tells it as it is.” Keith Bowen's exquisite pastel drawings bring each character vividly to life. These are supported by previously unseen old photographs set alongside stunning photography from Val Corbett which provides the canvas of the county upon which these Cumbrians leave their mark.

Now, finally, republished in an extremely high quality paperback edition, this book really is one not to miss.
