THE fine weather ensured the summer show season got off to a welcome start today as thousands flocked to the fifth Country Fest spectacular at Crooklands.

The first day of the weekend-long event included a range of attractions and demonstrations such as stunt kite flying, motor cycle displays, historic cars, birds of prey and fly fishing demonstrations.

Music and dance was provided by Milnthorpe Steel Band, LJ Danecfit and singer songwriter Chris Milner.

There were also craft exhibitions, food demonstrtions, dog show and sheep dog trials.

Christine Knipe, chief executive of the Westmorland County Agricultural Society, which organised the event, said she was 'delighted' with the first day.

"The weather has been extremely kind to us and people have flocked to enjoy the great mix of attractions and demonstrations. There's something here for all ages.

"Country Fest is one of the first shows at the start of the summer show season and after last summer's poor weather people are really keen to get out and enjoy events like this."

The second day of Country Fest gets underway tomorrow at 10am, when again there will be a rich mix of demonstrations, exhibitions and stalls. Highlights include Pony Club games and terrier racing and entertainment will be provided by Kirkby Stephen Big Jam Band, singing duo Liz and Leanne and Rigney Bank Ballet School.
