THE 214th Westmorland Show was a huge success, with crowds flocking to the historic show for its landmark year.

Her Royal Highness the Countess of Wessex was the special guest of the day, with the organisers honoured to have their first Royal visitor to the show.

The Royal visit was not the only exciting part of the day, the showground was packed full of stalls and engaging demonstrations, from Cumbrian Axemen to TV Chef Phil Vickery cooking Cumberland sausages.

The main attraction was the grand parade and presentation of awards as cattle, sheep, pigs and horses battled it out to be crowned supreme champion.

Craig Wilkins was proud his four-year-old Shire horse, Oaklodge Maisie who took home the esteemed supreme horse champion, with this being the first time he has ever competed in the show.

He said: “I’ve never been able to come before with the show always being on a week day but I booked the day off way in advance.

“This is a very special day, very proud, not bad for our first time to the show.”

Sarah Whitley, from Harrogate, was very excited that her pig, nicknamed Tommy took home supreme champion.

The 10-month, Gloucestershire Old Spot was a show veteran with this being the third championship he has won this year. The 16-year-old said: “The judges said he was perfect for his breed.”

Husband and wife team, Robert and Elaine Butterfield, from Bentham, took home the supreme cow championship, with their four month old Holstein.

Mrs Butterfield said their Inglewood Gold Doll was simply “ready” to take home the price. Judge, Aubrey Greenhalgh, said: “She stood out straight away so it was not a hard decision.

“It was, in particular, the width of her rear udder that made her stand out from the outset.

“There is often one that will immediately be obviously better than the rest and that happened here.”

Although the show was a huge success, the extreme traffic delays had many people complaining at being stuck in their cars for up to two hours.
