THE search for the fifth Young Cumbrian Artist of the Year has begun.

The award is designed to showcase the excellent work created by 15 to 24-year-olds across the county.

Eden Arts and the Institute of the Arts at the University of Cumbria hope to attract entries from artists working in a range of media.

The winner will be given £250 and an artist residency with Eden Arts at the Old Fire Station, Penrith.

Past winners have included a photographer, an animator, a film maker, and installation artist Emeli Hartness, pictured above with artist Margaret Harrison.

Emeli, of Carlisle, said the accolade helped her grow in confidence.

"I was so happy people responded positively to my artwork," she said.

"After winning the award I was able to work with Eden Arts on the events team for Picnic Cinema.

"This was an amazing insight into how outdoor events are run and how the passion for art and culture can create such fun and unique events.”
