THE tranquil waters of Coniston have been shattered by speed devils smashing dozens of records this week as boaters from across Europe took part in the annual Records Week bonanza.

Near perfect conditions and glorious sunshine rewarded the early birds who turned out to be thrilled by the mean machines creating waves on the lake.

At the time of going to press, more than 30 national and world records had already fallen, with enthusiasts keen to take advantage of the still conditions and re-write the record books.

Fresh from achieving a new national and world record with a speed of 138mph in the S3000 category, Ted Walsh, of Newby Bridge, said the event had really warmed up and he was hoping to have a shot at 150mph before the week was out.

Records Week settled into its new home for the second year in a row after its move from Windermere, its home for 35 years, following the introduction of the 10mph speed limit.

Dozens of boats, including some from as far away as Sweden, bobbed in the water at the Lake District National Park Boating Centre, off Lake Road, as they waited to launch.

The perfect autumn weather was a real plus point with more spectators gathering than last year's inaugural event at Coniston.
