A SOUTH Lakes charity which helps people with disabilities experience the thrills and spills of the outdoor life has received a welcome boost.

The Bendrigg Trust, in Old Hutton, Kendal, was given more than £1,800 from the Yorkshire Building Society’s Charitable Foundation in order to buy equipment which will allow more people to get involved with activities.

The trust provides outdoor activity courses for people of all ages, who are disabled or disadvantaged, with the aim of promoting integration, encouraging independence and building self-confidence.

And as a result of the donation, the charity has been able to buy a tent specifically for people with limited mobility, lightweight paddles to help those with upper body weaknesses and specially adapted canoe fittings to make river journeys inclusive for all abilities.

Jill Corso, of the trust, said: “We’re really pleased the society’s Charitable Foundation recognised the benefits the new equipment could bring. The donation really has made a big difference to the activities we’re able to offer and means even more disable people and those from disadvantaged backgrounds are able to experience fun-filled outdoor activities.”

Bev Cox, from YBS, said: “We’re committed to helping good causes in our local community and we’re delighted on this occasion to help The Bendrigg Trust.”
