Morecambe 166-4

Netherfield 165-5

Morecambe won by six wickets

Chorley Building Society Northern Premier League

NETHERFIELD were given a dose of their own medicine when they lost to Morecambe in the last over - the day after they beat Kendal in a Twenty20 match with three balls to spare.

Netherfield batted first having won the toss and were on 13 runs when Craig Walmsley run himself out in the fifth over for 10, with Ben Barrow caught and bowled by Gareth Pedder three balls later for one.

Pro Colin Ackermann put to rest some of his poor early season batting form with a determined 66 off 129 balls, which included eight fours. He put on a partnership of 81 with John Huck, spanning 25 overs before the wicketkeeper was caught and bowled by Vishal Tripathi for 39 in the 32nd over, leaving Field 94-3.

Captain Marc Brown also showed improvement as he put on a partnership of 55 with Ackermann, but he was stumped by Lewis Edge off Tripathi with five overs left, having struck 28 off 48 balls.

Right arm off spinner Tripathi completed a triumvirate of wickets when he claimed Ackermann’s after a Josh Dixon catch to put Netherfield 158-5, and 10 not out from Chris Parry helped Netherfield to 165-5 from their allotted overs.

Runs were hard to come by for the Parkside Road outfit but Field’s Ryan Wilson ensured the same for Morecambe with four maidens from his first five overs.

Scott Clement was equally as economic, conceding just 26 runs off his 10 overs, and he got a deserved wicket when Josh Dixon was trapped LBW in the 11th over for 15 to put Morecambe 27-1.

A second wicket stand of 61 between Mark Woodhead and Tripathi boosted the home side’s score to 81-1 at drinks, leaving the game very much in the balance as they chased 166 to win.

In the 28th over Tripathi was dismissed LBW by Ackermann for 36, and six overs later the pro struck again when Woodhead was out for 38 off 100 balls following a Walmsley catch as the home side continued the chase on 107-3.

Suman Shrestha and Ryan Pearson continued for Morecambe and with 10 overs left, they picked up the pace of their run-scoring. They recorded a minimum of three runs an over from the 41st onwards as Shrestha struck 26 before he was caught by Barrow off Wilson in the 45th over, leaving Morecambe 145-4 and needing 21 runs from the last 30 balls.

With Wilson and Ackermann on strike, Morecambe were 155-4 going into the last two overs, needing 11 runs to win off 12 balls, and they remained on target by scoring six runs in the 49th over to lift their score to 161-4.

With five runs required, two singles, a double and a single off Ackermann’s last over were enough for Morecambe to scrape over the line with just two balls left, with Pearson 30 not out and Tom Barnfield unbeaten on 11, to give Morecambe a 12-point victory.

Netherfield claimed two batting bonus points from the game.
